Success from innovation and diversification
From the slopes of Haleakalā to the docks of Kahului Harbor, the Pā‘ia Sugar Mill was a modern, innovative, and cutting-edge manufacturing facility. The Mill became the center of life in Pā‘ia providing homes, jobs, education and infrastructure for the community. Storefronts, schools, and social activities centered around plantation life. The close-knit villages and camps created the multicultural mix that makes Hawai‘i so special.
How to restore the Heart of Pā‘ia
Although the spirit of community and self-reliance lie dormant there is a budding movement sparking a revival of its storied legacy and collaborative manufacturing ingenuity. Existing structures and vacant land beckon to be alive and useful again with the clanking and ringing of production. Each square foot will accommodate a range of cottage industries to create spaces to work, gather and entertain. A place for local people to live and thrive. A place for generations to build a life and community in the heart of Pā’ia.
